How to Write Research Proposal - Everything you need to know

Image of research proposal

Writing a good and complete research project proposal is not an easy task for most students and even some researchers. A poor written project proposal can spell doom for an important and relevant project, while a well written project proposal promises success even before the completion of the project.

The purpose of a complete research project proposal is to convince your readers the importance your project and that you are more than capable of undertaking the project. A good and complete research project proposal should contain all the necessary features required in the research process with enough information for readers to evaluate and study.

Irrespective of your area of specialization and methodology, a complete research project proposal should present the purpose of the research and justify the need to study the research. It will also give a full detail of the design of experiment and the method you want to use to achieve your goal, including the review of relevant literature that you will use to support your aim.

A good and complete research project proposal should have adequate information to convince your readers the relevance of your research, the knowledge gap (i.e. the problem you wish to address) and how you want to go about carrying out the research.

The format of a complete research project proposal varies between fields, but most research project proposals should contain at least these essential sections:

Cover page/title page
The cover/title page should be short and descriptive. It often carries the name of the institution, title of the research project, name of the author and supervisor as well as the date of the research project. A well written cover/title page is always catchy and gives the reader a view of what is obtainable in the research project proposal.

Chapter one
1.0    Introduction

The purpose of introduction is to provide the necessary context for the research project proposal. It is the background and basic frame work for the project research.

1.1 Background of study
This is where you explain the background of your research proposal and explain in detail why it is important

1.2 Statement of problem

This is where you state the knowledge gap you want to address in your research topic. In this section, you are to give a more detailed explanation on the purpose of the research project than what you gave in the introduction

1.3 Justification of the project research
This is where you try to convince your readers on the relevance and importance as well as the economic benefits of your research topic

1.4 Aims and objectives
This is where you list the goals you want to achieve in the project research and how you want to go about achieving these goals

1.5 Scope of the work
This specify the area you want to cover in the research project proposal

Chapter two
2.0    Literature review

A literature review is the study of existing information on a research topic. It is used to identify trends and gaps in the research. It is always important to show your reader that you are very familiar with the topic of your research project. A good literature review convinces your reader that you have a wide and perfect knowledge of the research project.

2.1 Review of recent related works
By reviewing the current literature on your research topic, you can narrow down your focus and establish a theory that has not yet been basically addressed.

2.2 Summary of review of recently related works
This is a brief discussion on the review of the current literature on recently related works.

Chapter three
3.0    Method of experiment / equipment

This is where you write down the method you want to use to carry out your research proposal and list of the equipment you will use in generating accurate results.

Chapter four
4.0    Result and discussion

This is where you write down the results you obtain during the research project, and then discuss it in details.

Chapter five
5.0    Conclusion

The conclusion retells the importance of your research proposal. It also provides a brief summary of the entire research. Conclusion should emphasize on why the research problem is worth investigating, why your research proposal is unique, and how it should advance existing knowledge.

5.1 Recommendation
This is where you summarize the limitations you encountered during the research process and proffering solutions to these problems.

5.2 Contribution to knowledge
This is where you write down the involvement and input of your research project to science

Reference
This is where you list the literature that you actually used or cited in your research proposal.
