The United States is seriously considering banning Chinese social media apps, including TikTok, saying that it could be sharing user data with the Chinese government.
The Indian government has of last week banned TikTok and now, a few of the US senators wants it banned or investigated for censorship but the U.S Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, in an interview with Fox News Channel, is still maintaining how U.S considers banning TikTok. "I don't want to get out in front of the President (Donald Trump), but it's something we're looking at" he said.
TikTok is owned by the Beijing-based tech company ByteDance and is led by an American CEO, with hundreds of employees and key leaders across safety, security, product, and public policy in the U.S.
The ban is due to controversial national security law targeted at ensuring the safety and sovereignty of the U.S in cyberspace. Washington's top diplomat also warned that people should not download the app except "if you want your private information in the hands of the Chinese Communist Party."
A TikTok spokesperson in response to Pompeo's comments said that "We have no higher priority than promoting a safe and secure app experience for our users. We have never provided user data to the Chinese government, nor would we do so if asked."
TikTok says its data centers are located entirely outside of China, and that none of that data is subject to any Chinese law. That all the U.S user data is stored in the United States, with a backup in Singapore. A TikTok spokesperson responded to how U.S considers banning TikTok and also told the CNN Business in May that he thinks the national security concerns are "unfounded."
TikTok app has become so popular over the united states and have also gained popularity in some western countries. It is rumored that millions of people have downloaded this app in the first quarter of this year even more than any other app in history and that is according to analytics company sensor tower.
